Set amongst the rugged dunes of King Island’s west coast, Ocean Dunes Golf Course delivers an exhilarating links experience overlooking the waters of Bass Strait. Located just five minutes from the island’s main township of Currie and King Island Airport, it combines spectacular coastal golf with convenient access for travellers visiting the island.
Designed by Graeme Grant, a former course superintendent at Melbourne’s famed Kingston Heath Golf Club, Ocean Dunes opened in 2016 and has since established itself among Australia’s leading public-access golf courses. The layout stretches across approximately two kilometres of windswept coastline, with six holes running directly beside the ocean and dramatic changes in elevation creating spectacular views throughout the round.
Together with nearby Cape Wickham, Ocean Dunes makes King Island one of the essential destinations on any Tasmania golf holiday. The combination of world-class links golf, remote island scenery and King Island’s renowned food and produce makes the journey as memorable as the golf itself. Ocean Dunes is an 18-hole, par-72 links measuring approximately 6,365 metres (6,960 yards), routed through towering coastal dunes, sandy waste areas and native rough overlooking Bass Strait.
The course has a wonderfully natural character, with wide, undulating fescue fairways, strategic bunkering and large, contoured bentgrass greens shaped into the existing landscape. The exposed location means wind plays an important role in the experience, with changing direction and strength capable of transforming club selection and strategy from one round to the next.
The opening stretch immediately introduces golfers to the drama of Ocean Dunes. The par-5 1st descends from an elevated tee through the dunes towards the coastline, while the short par-4 2nd hugs the ocean and rewards players prepared to challenge the more aggressive line. The long par-4 3rd continues alongside the coast before reaching a green nestled naturally amongst the dunes.
Ocean Dunes is particularly renowned for its par-3s. The spectacular 4th measures approximately 130 metres (142 yards), while the formidable 10th stretches to approximately 210 metres (230 yards), with both bringing the coastline and prevailing winds firmly into play. The coastal 14th adds another memorable short hole to one of the most impressive collections of par-3s in Australian golf.
While the seaside holes provide many of the postcard moments, the inland sections offer a contrasting test through elevated and rolling terrain. Firm playing surfaces, unpredictable coastal winds and opportunities to use the ground game give Ocean Dunes the characteristics golfers travel to Tasmania to experience.
The Ocean Dunes clubhouse enjoys panoramic views across the golf course and rugged King Island coastline, providing an inviting place to relax before or after a round.
The clubhouse restaurant celebrates the produce for which King Island is famous, with local beef, cheese and seafood featuring on the menu. Indoor and outdoor seating allows golfers to enjoy the coastal surroundings, while the adjoining bar offers a selection of drinks after golf.
A fully stocked pro shop provides golf equipment and apparel, with the on-site team available to assist visiting golfers with course information and prevailing conditions. Practice facilities include a putting green and dedicated chipping and pitching area. While there is no full driving range, these facilities provide everything required for a traditional links-style warm-up.
Golf carts are available for hire and can be a worthwhile option given the course’s considerable elevation changes. Although there is no accommodation directly at Ocean Dunes, a range of accommodation is available nearby in Currie and elsewhere on King Island.
