Kingston Beach Golf Club is located in Kingston, 15 minutes south of Hobart on Tasmania’s Channel Coast, where Browns River meets the Derwent estuary at Halfmoon Bay. The club was formed in November 1922, with an original 9-hole layout devised by landowner Robert Nettlefold and John Irving, professional at Launceston Golf Club. The course was extended and remodelled in 1956 by noted architect Vern Morcom, and today plays as an 18-hole, par-71 parkland layout of 5,803 metres. It holds the distinction of being Tasmania’s most southerly championship course although this record may be broken once the Arm End golf course is completed.
The club has a long association with the Tasmanian Open, first played in 1913 and held at Kingston Beach on numerous occasions across its history, with past champions including Peter Toogood and Alf Toogood. The course is a proclaimed wildlife sanctuary, and native bird life is a regular feature of a round here.
A defining characteristic of the course is its inclinator, which carries golfers up to the elevated 18th tee, a rare piece of golf infrastructure in Australia. The course is largely flat and easy walking aside from this one uphill stretch, with water in play on six holes and views across the river, bay and Mount Wellington Range throughout.
Visitors and green fee players are welcome. Club and buggy hire are available, and a resident golf professional operates from the pro shop. Members’ competitions run Wednesday and Saturday, with a ladies’ competition on Tuesday and Thursday, so visitors are advised to book ahead around these times. We recommend combining a round of golf at Kingston Beach in Hobart with a round at Claremont, Tasmania Golf Club and Royal Hobart.
Kingston Beach’s routing follows the flats where Browns River opens into the Derwent estuary, giving the course a low-lying, water-adjacent character for most of its length. The land is gentle and largely flat, making it an easy walk, with the notable exception of the approach to the 18th tee, reached via the club’s inclinator rather than on foot. Fairways are edged with eucalypts and light native bushland, and the surrounding wildlife sanctuary status means birdlife is a constant presence during the round.
Vern Morcom’s 1956 remodelling built on the original Nettlefold and Irving layout, refining individual holes rather than reworking the course’s structure. Additional land purchased south of the river allowed the 11th and 12th to be lengthened, with the 11th evolving from a short one-shotter into a full par five over successive redesigns. This layered history gives the course a routing that has been shaped gradually rather than imposed all at once, and it retains a traditional, unhurried character as a result.
