About

Located at Seven Mile Beach, approximately 20 kilometres east of Hobart and just five minutes from Hobart Airport, Royal Hobart Golf Club is one of Tasmania’s most prestigious and historic golf clubs. The club traces its origins to 1916 and was granted its Royal title in 1925, placing it among a select group of Australian golf clubs to receive royal patronage. Its present course opened in 1963 and was designed by acclaimed Australian golf architect Vern Morcom, with more recent refinements overseen by Richard Chamberlain.

Renowned for its consistently high standard of course presentation, Royal Hobart combines traditional parkland golf with a naturally sandy site that provides excellent playing conditions throughout the year. The club also possesses an impressive championship pedigree. It remains the only Tasmanian golf course to have hosted the Australian Open, with Jack Nicklaus winning the championship here in 1971, and has hosted numerous Tasmanian Open, Australian Amateur and Australian Women’s Amateur championships.

For golfers visiting southern Tasmania, Royal Hobart offers an important contrast to the spectacular modern links courses around Hobart. Its history, conditioning and championship credentials make it a natural inclusion in a Hobart golf holiday, particularly when combined with nearby Seven Mile Beach and other leading Tasmanian golf courses including Tasmania Golf Club and Kingston Beach.

Royal Hobart is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course measuring 6,174 metres (6,752 yards). Designed by Vern Morcom across a naturally sandy 175-acre property, the course combines traditional parkland characteristics with strategic bunkering and an emphasis on accurate, thoughtful golf.

The front nine features a series of doglegs that encourage golfers to consider position and angles from the tee, while the back nine generally adopts a more direct routing. Relatively gentle terrain makes Royal Hobart an enjoyable course to walk, but its apparent simplicity can be deceptive.

Fairways are generally narrow to moderate in width and framed by mature native and introduced trees, creating clearly defined playing corridors. Accuracy from the tee is therefore important, with good positioning providing considerably better opportunities to attack the greens.

Bunkering is one of Royal Hobart’s defining architectural features. More than 80 fairway and greenside bunkers take advantage of the property’s natural sand base, influencing strategy from the tee and demanding precise approach play around the putting surfaces.

The collection of par-3s is another strength of the layout. Each is heavily influenced by strategic bunkering, with the formidable 15th stretching to approximately 200 metres (219 yards) from the back markers and requiring a particularly committed long-iron or hybrid approach.

Royal Hobart may not possess the dramatic coastal terrain of Tasmania’s modern links courses, but its challenge lies elsewhere: intelligent positioning, precise iron play and accomplished course management. Combined with excellent conditioning and more than a century of golfing heritage, it provides a distinctly traditional Tasmanian golf experience.

Royal Hobart Golf Club provides a comprehensive range of facilities for members and visiting golfers, centred around its clubhouse overlooking the course.

The clubhouse includes bar and restaurant facilities, providing an inviting setting for a pre-round meal or post-golf drink. Locker rooms and changing facilities are also available for visiting players.

Practice facilities include a large putting green, dedicated chipping area and two practice fairways, providing golfers with ample opportunity to warm up before their round. An on-site PGA professional offers tuition and golf advice, while the pro shop stocks equipment, apparel and golfing essentials.

Motorised golf carts and pull buggies are available for hire, along with rental clubs for travellers who prefer not to bring their own equipment. The relatively gentle terrain also makes Royal Hobart particularly suitable for golfers who enjoy walking.

While there is no accommodation directly at the club, its location is extremely convenient for visitors. Hobart Airport is approximately five minutes away, while central Hobart and its extensive range of hotels, restaurants and attractions are within easy reach.

Tasmania Golf Travel can arrange Royal Hobart as part of a tailored Hobart and southern Tasmania golf itinerary, combining the club with Seven Mile Beach and other leading courses for a diverse Tasmania golf experience.
