Located on a spectacular coastal peninsula at Seven Mile Beach, just five kilometres from Hobart Airport, the South Course at 7 Mile Beach Golf Links is one of the newest additions to Tasmania’s rapidly evolving golf landscape.
Designed by Mike Clayton and Mike DeVries of Clayton, DeVries & Pont (CDP Golf), the South Course occupies a remarkable stretch of natural duneland between Tiger Head Bay and Seven Mile Beach. Clayton devised the routing, while DeVries personally shaped all 18 greens, creating a true links course that embraces the firm ground, natural contours and ever-changing coastal winds of southern Tasmania.
The project was conceived by Tasmanian professional golfer Mat Goggin, who grew up playing nearby Royal Hobart Golf Club and spent more than a decade pursuing his vision for golf at Seven Mile Beach. Following a preview period in 2025, the South Course officially opened for full public play on 4 December 2025.
With Royal Hobart nearby and Hobart Airport only minutes away, 7 Mile Beach has added another compelling reason for golfers to include southern Tasmania in their itinerary. The South Course is an 18-hole, par-72 links measuring 6,564 metres (7,178 yards) from the back tees, routed through natural coastal dunes on the narrow peninsula between Tiger Head Bay and Seven Mile Beach.
Mike Clayton’s routing moves through several distinct areas of the property, allowing the landscape to reveal itself progressively throughout the round. The opening hole provides a relatively gentle introduction through lower dunes before the par-3 2nd brings the spectacular setting firmly into focus. Measuring approximately 133 metres (145 yards), it has already become one of the course’s most recognisable holes.
From there, the course gradually climbs towards higher and more exposed terrain. The 3rd and 4th lead golfers towards the elevated 5th tee, where expansive views extend across Tiger Head Bay and towards kunanyi / Mount Wellington. At this higher point on the property, the influence of Tasmania’s coastal winds becomes particularly apparent.
The architecture deliberately avoids chasing elevated viewpoints at every opportunity. Instead, tees, fairways and greens have been connected to create a natural, highly walkable routing that follows the movement of the existing dunes. Fairways can appear deceptively narrow from certain tees before revealing considerably more room, encouraging confident play and rewarding golfers who understand the best angles into DeVries’ intricately shaped greens.
Firm turf and natural undulation encourage golfers to use the ground, while changing wind direction continually alters strategy and club selection. The result is a distinctly Tasmanian links experience where creativity, trajectory control and thoughtful positioning are more important than simply playing through the air.
As the first of two planned courses at 7 Mile Beach Golf Links, the South Course has established the property as an exciting new component of a Tasmania golf itinerary.
As one of Tasmania’s newest golf developments, facilities at 7 Mile Beach Golf Links are continuing to evolve alongside the wider property.
A temporary clubhouse currently provides golfers with a relaxed space before and after their round, together with food and beverage service including fresh coffee and a selection of drinks. The current pro shop operates from a purpose-designed temporary facility while plans for permanent clubhouse and member amenities progress.
The South Course is walking only, consistent with the traditional links philosophy of the property. Golfers should confirm the current availability of caddies, pull trolleys and other services when arranging their round, as facilities and offerings will continue to develop.
There is currently no accommodation directly on site. However, the course’s exceptional location approximately seven minutes from Hobart Airport and within easy reach of central Hobart, makes it straightforward to incorporate into a southern Tasmania golf trip.
With the South Course now open and a second 18-hole course under development, 7 Mile Beach is emerging as a significant new golf destination for Tasmania.
