Set amongst towering coastal dunes near the seaside town of Bridport in north-east Tasmania, Barnbougle Dunes is one of Australia’s most celebrated golf courses and a defining experience on any Tasmania golf holiday. It is best combined with a trip to Hobart to play 7 Mile Beach, or King Island to play Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes.
Designed by renowned golf architects Tom Doak and Mike Clayton, the course opened in 2004 on a remarkable stretch of natural duneland overlooking Bass Strait. Its arrival transformed Tasmania’s reputation as an international golf destination, becoming the first new Australian course to enter the world’s Top 100 rankings and establishing Barnbougle as a pilgrimage for golfers from around the globe.
Barnbougle Dunes is links golf in its purest form. Firm, fast-running fairways follow the natural movement of the dunes, deep bunkers merge into the surrounding landscape and constantly changing coastal winds ensure no two rounds are quite the same. Rather than overpowering the landscape, the architecture embraces it, creating a course that feels as though it has occupied this coastline for generations.
Together with neighbouring Lost Farm and Bougle Run, Barnbougle Dunes forms the centrepiece of a Tasmania golf trip through the state’s north-east. Tasmania Golf Travel can incorporate Barnbougle into a complete itinerary including accommodation, golf, transport and other leading Tasmanian courses.
Barnbougle Dunes is an 18-hole, par-71 championship links measuring approximately 6,148 metres (6,723 yards) from the back tees. The course is routed through spectacular coastal duneland between Bass Strait and the Great Forester River estuary, moving between sheltered low-lying terrain and elevated dune ridges exposed to the prevailing wind.
Doak and Clayton worked with the natural contours of the property, using minimal earthmoving and allowing existing dunes and landforms to dictate the positioning of fairways, bunkers and greens. The result is a wonderfully strategic course where golfers are continually presented with choices. Wide fairways provide room from the tee, but the best angle into a green often requires players to challenge bunkers, dunes or more demanding sections of the fairway.
The opening holes provide an immediate introduction before the course enters a memorable sequence through the dunes. The par-4 4th presents a compelling risk-and-reward challenge around an enormous natural bunker, while the famous par-3 7th – “Tom’s Little Devil” – measures little more than 100 metres yet can be transformed completely by the wind. Its small, elevated green and severe surrounding bunkers make accuracy essential.
Later in the round, the short par-4 12th reaches one of the highest points on the property. Longer hitters may contemplate the green from the tee in favourable conditions, while its elevated position provides magnificent views across the course and surrounding Tasmanian coastline.
Firm turf, dramatic bunkering and the opportunity to play shots along the ground are fundamental to the Barnbougle experience. Combined with the ever-changing Bass Strait winds, they make the course endlessly varied and reward creativity, positioning and intelligent course management.
Barnbougle has been developed as a complete golf destination, allowing travelling golfers to stay, dine and play within the spectacular coastal property.
The clubhouse overlooking the course and Bass Strait includes a restaurant and bar, while a range of on-site accommodation provides convenient options for multi-night golf stays. Conference and event facilities are also available.
Golf facilities include a driving range, practice putting green and short-game area, along with a well-stocked pro shop offering golf merchandise, equipment and club hire. Caddies can also be arranged and provide valuable local knowledge of the course, particularly when navigating Barnbougle’s contours and changing coastal conditions.
Barnbougle Dunes is a walking-only golf course. Golf carts are not available for general play. Golfers with a genuine medical requirement may request a cart with an appropriate medical certificate, subject to approval and availability. In these circumstances, the cart must be driven by a Barnbougle caddie, and both the applicable cart hire and caddie fees must be paid.
