Set amongst the spectacular coastal dunes of north-east Tasmania, Barnbougle Lost Farm is the acclaimed sister course to Barnbougle Dunes and an essential part of the Barnbougle golf experience. Located near Bridport and overlooking Bass Strait, Lost Farm offers its own distinctive interpretation of Tasmanian links golf across a dramatic landscape of towering dunes, rolling farmland and the Forester River.
Designed by legendary American golf architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, with Dave Axland, Lost Farm officially opened in 2010 and quickly earned international recognition. Within weeks of opening it was ranked among Australia’s leading courses and entered GOLF Magazine’s World Top 100, establishing Lost Farm as a world-class course in its own right rather than simply an accompaniment to neighbouring Barnbougle Dunes.
One of its most distinctive features is its 20-hole layout. In addition to the traditional 18-hole, par-72 routing, golfers can play two optional short par-3s – 13A and 18A – adding another dimension to the experience.
For golfers travelling to Tasmania, playing both Lost Farm and Barnbougle Dunes, and Bougle Run provides a fascinating comparison between two very different approaches to links architecture. Barnbougle Lost Farm is an 18-hole, par-72 championship links measuring approximately 6,299 metres (6,889 yards), with two additional optional par-3 holes creating its distinctive 20-hole configuration.
While Lost Farm shares the same remarkable coastal environment as Barnbougle Dunes, its character is noticeably different. Coore and Crenshaw routed the course across a broader and more varied landscape, moving through dramatic dunes, open links terrain and areas bordering the Forester River. Significant elevation changes provide expansive views across the property and Bass Strait.
Generous fairways are a defining characteristic, with some reaching extraordinary widths. This creates an inviting experience from the tee but disguises much of the course’s strategy. Positioning is crucial, as the easiest route from the tee does not necessarily provide the best angle into Lost Farm’s intricately shaped greens. Coastal winds further influence those decisions, encouraging golfers to think their way around the course rather than simply pursue distance.
The short par-3 4th, Sal’s Point, is beautifully positioned within the coastal landscape and can become particularly demanding when exposed to the prevailing wind. It is followed by the formidable par-4 5th, measuring approximately 443 metres (484 yards), which plays from elevated coastal terrain towards the Forester River valley and presents one of the course’s most memorable strategic challenges.
The optional 13A and 18A add another element of fun to the round and reinforce the unconventional spirit of Lost Farm. Combined with its enormous fairways, natural bunkering, expansive greens and spectacular Tasmanian setting, the course provides a distinctly different experience from Barnbougle Dunes – and a compelling reason to play both. This course is as spectacular as Cape Wickham and Ocean Dunes on King Island.
Barnbougle Lost Farm forms part of the wider Barnbougle golf resort, providing visiting golfers with the facilities required for a multi-day golf stay on Tasmania’s north-east coast.
On-site accommodation is available across the Barnbougle property, making it easy to combine rounds at Lost Farm, Barnbougle Dunes and the short-course experience at Bougle Run. Dining and bar facilities showcase Tasmanian hospitality and provide spectacular views across the surrounding golf course and coastal landscape.
Practice facilities include a driving range, putting green and short-game area, while the pro shop offers golf merchandise, equipment and club hire. Caddies can also be arranged and are particularly valuable for first-time visitors, providing local knowledge on lines from the tee, green complexes and the effects of the coastal wind.
Barnbougle Lost Farm is a walking-only golf course. Golf carts are not available for general play. Golfers with a genuine medical requirement may request a cart with an appropriate medical certificate, subject to approval and availability. Where approved, the cart must be driven by a Barnbougle caddie, with both the cart hire and caddie fees payable.
